Kling Kasse

One of the first machines I bought, on German ebay. The minute I saw it, I knew i had to have it - it looked like the Ferrari of cash registers. The truth is of course a bit different. The model 3117 from Robert Kling's machine factory was a regular electric adding machine. The clever thing was that it had a hole in the bottom, which, from the inside could be actuated when the total button was pressed. The accompanying cash drawer had a pin that fit inside the machine and when pushed would open the cash drawer. The machine works very well, it even prints in crisp black and red, and it rings a bell when opening the cash drawer. The turth about the red paint was unfortunately a bit more prozaic. It was the typical Kling grey, until someone painted it red. It's a great conversation piece, but sits hidden away in a drawer, as it is not a four-function calculator really ...

You can see on the indentification plate on the bottom of the machine that it states "Wervik" instead of Wetzlar. This is indeed a belgian town on the french border, where the Rokli/Kling calculator and adding machine business was relocated after demand for ball bearings became so large that there was no longer any room at the factory in Oberbielen for their production. In a way, this machine is thus a little belgian!
